RECONSTRUCTION: How do you fix a broken country and a broken system?
The country was broken apart because of the Civil War. Putting it back together again was like assembling a puzzle with missing pieces in a group where no one communicates with each other...
We did an activity in class involving jigsaw puzzles. Working in groups, we decided who would do what part of the puzzle and how we would put them together. Afterwards, we discussed how assembling a puzzle relates to the reconstruction of the country after the war. Some puzzles were missing pieces, just like how the country was missing connections between the North and South and pieces of the political system that unified the country were missing. Slavery was abolished, but we were missing the formula for what the next step would be for all of these newly freed individuals.
